November 30 - National Computer Security Day and Cyber Monday
It is almost Cyber Monday! With everyone shopping all over the internet on Monday, I think it is a great time to discuss Cyber Mondays counterpart, National Computer Security Day! With all your devices holding a lot of information about you, bolstering on your computer security may not be a bad thing. In 1988, National Computer Security day was created to raise awareness to the rise of cyber attacks and viruses.
We have all had some sort of virus or at least a cyber attack of some sort, whether it is disguised well like a back-end program to the not so well hidden like donations to the prince of some country. The most common type of cyber attack is phishing where a scammer sends information to you posing as a legitimate institution. Phishing can happen in multiple ways such as email, text message, or phone call. How to protect ourselves from getting cyber attacked or fix your systems if you already have a virus? Similar to how we put locks on our door or install video camera doorbells, you want to add those walls of protection to your computer in the same way.
If you do not already use a password manager, I highly recommend it. What is a password manager you may ask? What a password manager does is it helps generate difficult passwords for websites and saves all of your existing passwords so that when you log on to a website, it will auto populate your login information. The great part is that you only have to remember one master password instead of login information for each separate site. Two password managers that I have had positive experiences with are LastPass and Dashlane. Both have free versions and are capable of integrating into browsers such as Google Chrome.
If you are in the market to purchase software to protect your computer and other devices such as a smartphone, here are some great products to help protect you from cyber attacks.
Recommended by a cyber security company manager, Bitdefender is one of the best out there. Compatible with both PC and Windows. It provides real time data and multi-layer malware and ransomware protection across any social media platform, password managers, and even webcam protection. One of the best features is that it provides you with a Bitdefender VPN for the day so that you can access your online banking/financial institutions safely.
The Antivirus software is cheaper than the Total Security, but is not as expansive in malware protection. If you are looking to bolster your overall in home wifi, and not just your devices, the Bitdefender Box 2 is the product you want. It plugs into your router and will protect all the devices connected to the wifi system including smart devices, computers, smart phones, etc. The device is all controlled through a smartphone and can help you protect your home.
Below are links to all the Bitdefender products mentioned, and once that is complete, there is no connected credit card to auto renew for you!

Among the larger cyber security companies like McAfee, Norton's 360 product like stacks up to be one of the best. It provides secure VPNs, dark web monitoring, and real time threat protection. A great part about a lot of the Norton 360 Deluxe products is that it provides 50GB of secure PC Cloud Backup. This is for all of you out there that don't have a Mac or any Apple products.
The one caveat to Norton 360 products is that you do need to put a payment method down in order to activate the account. That means whether you buy a 12 month or 2 year product, it will continue to auto-renew the payment to give you the same package every time. If you are forgetful like me, then this could be a great solution, but if you do not like it after the first year and you forget to cancel the auto-renewal, well this could definitely be a thorn in your side.
Below is a list of a few Norton 360 products that are on sale, but remember what I said above, it may be cheap now but the renewal will most likely not be on sale.
Norton 360 Deluxe 2021 - Antivirus Software for 5 Devices (Auto-renewal): Check Price (https://amzn.to/3m611p3)
Norton 360 Premium 2021 - Antivirus software for 10 Devices (Auto-renewal): Check Price (https://amzn.to/3m7ivl8)

Kaspersky would be my next choice after Bitdefender and Norton 360. Kaspersky protects your devices by blocking viruses & malware, filtering phishing emails, defending your wifi networks, blocks unauthorized access from your webcam, etc. Compatible with both Mac and PC. It is overall a great product and will protect your devices from outside threats that you do not want welcomed. Kaspersky may not protect nearly as much stuff as Bitdefender and Norton 360, but it makes the top 3 because of the price. When the other two are not on sale, Kaspersky is definitely a solid, slightly cheaper option to have ongoing security on your computer.
Below are a few Kaspersky products you may want to look at. If any of these products go above the below prices, get the product from the website as it will be cheaper than the Amazon listings. If you want to understand more about the difference between each product (Amazon listing is not very helpful), follow this link to their website to learn: https://usa.kaspersky.com/home-security/v3

These are my top 3 choices for cyber security programs. I hope you found the above information useful and I hope that one of these products can help keep your devices safe. Happy National Cyber Security and I hope everyone stays safe, both virtually and physically!
