Charities and Christmas Lights - Let the Light Shine

Updated: Dec 7, 2020

December 1 - National Christmas Lights Day and Giving Tuesday

With Covid-19 plaguing the world and trapping all of us in our homes, isolated, we should all look to spread love and and give back where we can. I know personally for me, there is nothing more gratifying than knowing you helped change someone's life for the better. The focus of today's blog will be on different charities that I have helped volunteer for, that had an amazing experience on my life.

I know it is also National Christmas lights day and I wanted to address that first. I know that I have already begun decorating for the holiday season (I actually already decorated before Thanksgiving....whoops!) and I see many have already as well! I have been on many walks and have enjoyed all of the Christmas decor I have seen from the icicles to the amazing Santa hat wearing pegasus on someone's lawn. If you are like me and have been pretty bummed out from 2020, decorate and do all the things you wouldn't be able to do with your busy holiday schedule! Snuggle up on your couch and watch all the Christmas movies you always say you are going to watch but never get around to or build a gingerbread house with your family. There are so many possibilities to brighten up your holiday season and I encourage you to put up those holiday decorations because it certainly has already brightened my holiday season.

On the other hand, if you want to find ways to give back, then here are a few charities that have really been impactful to my own life and support great causes! If you are looking to donate money, time, or just an Instagram post, read below to learn more about these amazing organizations and what they do.

Save the Children

If you are looking to help donate to charities that are providing Covid-19 relief to children, this is the charity to lookout for! With a lot of kids not able to go to school, lacking life saving health care, worried about finding their next meal, and a heightened risk of physical and emotional harm, Save the Children provides meal delivery, trauma centers, and hygiene kits to help distribute. Save the Children operates not only in the United States, but all over the world helping the younger generation get the necessary resources.

I have heard only great things about Save the Children, and with all of their help so far during the pandemic, they have been helping change lives, one by one. If you give today, you can provide triple amount of the support with your donation! You can help donate to the cause at the following link:

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an amazing nonprofit organization that works across all 50 states and over 70 countries with the goal of providing decent housing for everyone. Officially starting in 1976, Habitat for Humanity was started in Georgia and has worked to create "partnership housing" which has those in need of adequate shelter work side by side with volunteers to build the home. They help so many different communities of people like veterans to helping restore homes for individuals.

I personally have volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity home building project and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. At the home building project, my mom and I got a chance to help build a bathroom and put in support structures to help line the insulation for the wall. I have had no building experience beforehand and all the volunteers there helped guide me in exactly what to do and the camaraderie of all the other volunteers made it such a fun, but hard working experience. I went home that day absolutely exhausted, but had such a blast doing helping with a small part of a project that will help impact a families life so deeply.

If building is not so much your thing, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore resells donated furniture, appliances, home goods, building materials, and more. You can help price items, move inventory in and out of the loading dock, or help sell the items at the register. All the funds that are generated from the store go to help fund the building projects for the family homes.

If you make a donation today, your gift will be matched so that your donation is 2 times what you gave. Even donating $5 (which will be $10 with the match) helps and goes a long way.

If you want to learn more about the great things Habitat for Humanity is doing or want to donate to help families afford housing, check out there website below:

Ronald McDonald House

The last charity we are going to mention (even though there are so many other great charities out there) is the Ronald McDonald House which helps bridge access to healthcare by keeping families and sick children around the care that they need. Many medical workers help with providing great healthcare to all of these children and provide them the level and care and service they need/deserve. the charity runs chapters all over the world providing kids with emotional support, food, and even housing.

If want a way to support all these families and sick children, the Ronald McDonald House is currently running a donation drive where if you post their hand sign and hashtag them, they will donate $100 to house children if they have no place to stay during hospitalization. This is a great and easy way to donate, even if you do not have the means to donate time or money. The following is the link to the instagram campaign:

I hope you enjoyed learning a little more about 3 amazing charities that are working hard to change people's lives everyday. As much as we love giving gifts to our family and friends, helping someone in need can make an impact that feels small to you, but changes someone's life. That is really what the holiday season is all about.

Share this post and encourage your friends and families to help give back to a world in need! I hope you all have a fantastic Giving Tuesday and have a great start to your holiday season!
